Unmatted vs. Matted and Framed or Otherwise Mounted

The smallest prints I offer are 12x15 inches (rectangular format) and 15x15  inches (square format).  I call these size prints "Festival Prints".  I offer Festival Prints for sale on-line either matted (and shipped in a sturdy flat) or unmatted (and shipped in a sturdy mailing tube).

For Festival Prints:

  • "Matted" is trimmed to approximately 1-inch edges on the print and taped to a 4-ply white board with a 6-ply white/white core overmat with 1 3/4 inch borders on the 12x15 prints and 2 1/4 inch borders on the 15x15 prints. The matted print is delivered in a protective, heavy-gauge poly bag. Matted prints may be framed as they are, or taken to your frame shop and re-mounted perhaps with wider borders and/or a heavier overmat, and then framed.
  • "Unmatted" is trimmed to approximately 1-inch edges and rolled in archival tissue in a 5-inch diameter heavy-duty, sealed mailing tube.
I pay the shipping for unmatted prints that are printed on Premium Lustre.  Premium Lustre can be rolled and shipped in tube.  Prints printed on Exhibition Fibre cannot be rolled.  They must be shipped flat.  The cost of shipping prints on Exhibition Fibre adds up to $35 to the price of the print, depending upon the size.

If want your prints deliivered framed and you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I will arrange to have your prints framed by my framer (Dostal Studio in San Rafael) and delivered if that is your desire.  Please contact me to discuss this (see "Contact" in navigation bar above).

However, letting your own framer design and make your matting and framing, or mounting your prints on aluminum or di-bond will put the aesthetic choices involved in your hands, rather than in mine, and it will save you money on shipping.  Shipping framed prints is very expensive.
